More or less cushioning depends on how you walk, it interacts with your stride and pace.
As a parallel to running shoes, when running fast (or sprinting) firmer shoes feel better, whereas softer soles feel superior for longer distance recovery runs (or marathons).

Shoes with lots of cushioning are usually more comfortable for people with higher arches, and shoes with less cushioning tend to be more comfortable for people with flat arches.
High arches absorb less of the shock with each step than low arches, thereby we tend to recommend soft bounce for people with high arches & energy rebound for people with flat arches.
